For a long time, Austinites loved touting local brands and businesses. In more recent years, a lot of corporate big wigs have moved in and taken away some of the weird that Austin promoted. Well, there are many of us who still love supporting local, small business in Austin and you see it often in the brewing community.

Owner Jeff Willis layin’ down Skull Mechanix Brewery facts.

Take Skull Mechanix. Family owned by Jeff Willis, his wife, and mother. Jeff took the ladies of Austin Girls Pint Out on a tour of the new brewery and told us all about his love for obscure beers, how he had a dream to open up a brewery twenty years ago and made it happen, and the journey to get there.  From his start as a bartender on 6th Street to pulling in unique beers at the (now closed) Ginger Man downtown, to opening and running a brewer’s dream bar Top and Handle in Fort Collins, Jeff used his network, brew knowledge, and marketing background to open Skull Mechanix in February of this year. Partnering with local tattoo artists for artwork, hiring well known Austin brewer Michael Waters, and filtering local water, Skull Mechanix keeps it local.

You can read more about Jeff and Skull Mechanix online in the Austin StatesmanEater Austin, and more.

The ladies of Austin GPO had a great time tasting beers, talking with staff, and checking out Jeonju Korena Grill  the food truck on site that day. Overall a GREAT experience and I highly recommend trying their Best Bitter. It’s delicious!

Til next time! Cheers.
