This year, as Girls Pint Out celebrated its 9th anniversary, Sun King Brewing celebrated its 10th. Girls Pint Out has been growing with Sun King Brewing, and in good part because of Sun King’s support, since the very beginning. Sun King was the first to sign up as a Girls Pint Out sponsor when Girls Pint Out became a 501(c)(3) in 2014 and has been a sponsor ever since.
Every year as part of its sponsorship, Sun King hosts a stellar educational experience for Indianapolis Girls Pint Out. The cost of attendance is a donation to whichever charity we choose; this year, attendees brought toys for a toy drive.
Each educational experience has been special and uniquely created for a select group of Girls Pint Out ladies. We’ve tasted unreleased beers, blended beers from different barrels, created different flavor profiles in old favorites, and learned about tasting beers and off-flavors – just to name a few. This year’s special educational experience was on yeast.
Megan Pelsor, one of Sun King’s beer scientists and the leader of Indy Pink Boots Society, created a special treat for each of the attendees. Megan oversees Sun King’s yeast and she pulled Sunlight Cream Ale wort and added different strains of yeast to each batch. As a result, the class was a sensory experience as we smelled and tasted through the same beer with old yeast, Czech lager yeast, English Ale yeast, tropical IPA yeast, farmhouse yeast, and cider yeast.
The event was interactive as ladies in attendance asked many questions and yelled out what they smelled and tasted in each, which varied widely between the samples.
